Wanted Ball Girls and Ball Boys... Duluth Varsity Soccer Games

We encourage all Duluth Middle School students and youth soccer players to come out and support the high school teams; however, we extend a special opportunity to those enrolled in the Duluth Middle School Soccer Advisement Club and other youth soccer players to serve as a Duluth Soccer Ball Girl / Ball Boy.

Ball Girls / Boys are those people who give a player a ball when a game ball is kicked out of play. They also quickly recover the balls that are kicked out of play.

If you would like to be a Duluth Soccer Ball Girl or Ball Boy during a Varsity home game, you will be:

  • admitted into the home game for free
  • given a coupon that you can redeem for a food item ($2 or less) and a drink at our Concession stand

Also, regular volunteers have an opportunity to earn a free Duluth Soccer T-shirt.

How Does It Work?

  1. Arrive at least 15 minutes before kickoff and sign in at the gate. Ball Girls / Boys will be selected on a first come-first serve basis (limit 6 per game)
  2. Sign in at the gate.
  3. Report to the Duluth Head Coach on the field (Gregg Tavani, Men's Varsity Coach; Vince Hayes, Women's Varsity Coach)
  4. Work the Game, tracking down and returning balls to players as quickly as possible.
  5. At half time, return to the gate (as a group) to pick up your Duluth Soccer Ball Boy / Girl Coupon and take the sign-in sheet to the Concession stand.
  6. At half time or any time before the Concession stand closes, you may redeem your Duluth Soccer Ball Boy / Girl Coupon at the Concession Stand for a food item ($2 or less) and a drink.
  7. After half time, work the second half of the game, tracking down and returning balls to players as quickly as possible. Players working the early game are welcome to stay and enjoy the late game as our guest.

Hayes Days - Spring 2011

Vince Hayes, Women's Varsity Head Coach, has already conducted two sessions at Duluth Middle School this spring. He will be conducting the final Hayes Days event of the season in April.

This is a great opportunity for aspiring middle school soccer players to get familiar with the Duluth High School Soccer program, meet and train with the Women's Varsity Coach and players, and have some fun in the process. Additionally, players will also have an opportunity to win Duluth Soccer Spirit Wear items during friendly competitions.

The last Hayes Days of the season will be held on Tuesday, April 19, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Duluth High School. Meet on the Duluth High School practice field, which is adjacent to Duluth's Stadium and near the Field House on the north end of campus.

Important Notes:

Middle School participants:

  1. may arrive early to watch the Men's Varsity play. Be sure to mention that you are a Hayes Days' participant to get in free
  2. should wear appropriate soccer apparel (i.e., cleats encouraged) and bring water
  3. must provide their own transportation to/from Hayes Days at DHS
  4. are invited to stay and watch the Women's Varsity match as our guests

Also, Coach Hayes will extend invitations to selected players to participate in summer high school activities. For more information, contact Vince Hayes at Vince_Hayes@Gwinnett.k12.ga.us

Duluth Middle School introduces Duluth Soccer Advisement Club

The Duluth Middle School (DMS) has started a new Advisement Club for 6th grade girls; it's the Duluth Soccer Advisement Club. Under the direction of Dora Quick and supported by Martha Wallingford, approximately 19 DMS 6th grade students will meet twice a month to build team spirit, develop good sportsmanship, participate in activities and competitions, and play the game. Ms. Quick explained, "We would like to do a lot of things in the Club... The girls are very excited, and are looking forward to a fun year."

Coach Vince Hayes, head coach of the women's varsity, has been very supportive of this initiative. Historically, Coach Hayes has scheduled special clinics for the Middle Schoolers; these clinics, which are scheduled in the spring, have affectionately been referred to as "Hayes Days" and provide middle school players an opportunity to meet and train with the Duluth High varsity players. This new club provides middle school students with a regular opportunity throughout the school year to be involved in something that interests them and creates another way for young athletes to connect to the Duluth Soccer community.

For more information about the Duluth Soccer Advisement Club, contact Dora Quick at Dora_Quick@gwinnett.k12.ga.us.

Club Soccer programs for Wildcat improvement

A message from Coaches Hayes and Tavani:

It is imperative that we challenge ourselves on the off-season in order to improve our soccer abilities, challenge ourselves and ensure the future success of our program. For that, Club or Select soccer is a great resource for improvement and soccer development. The benefits are nearly endless to being involved in the greatest sport in the world year round.

A few simple guidelines:

If you are already on an elite-level team and are satisfied with your team and playing development, by all means stay on that team; you are already doing what is needed.

If you are on an B-D (2-4) level team in your age group you need to AT LEAST try out for two to three higher level teams:

  1. A team in the same age at a higher level
  2. Or a team at the same level in an older age
Trying out at multiple clubs offers a player more opportunities for finding a team and playing level that is a good match.
Money should not be an issue. Every soccer club has scholarship opportunities to families that need financial help, though sacrifices of time and work may be asked for in return.
